Natives try to cancel Washington Redskins trademark

In Pro-Football, Inc. v. Harjo, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia considers the decision of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board to cancel the registration of the Washington Redskins football team. Harjo claims that the name is disparaging to Native Americans. The District Court rules in favor of Pro-Football after finding the doctrine of laches is applicable (laches is an unreasonable delay in filing a claim that becomes unfair to the other party). Harjo petitions the Supreme Court of the United States, but it is denied in 2009.
